What a person chooses to call themselves obviously says a lot about that person. While I wouldn’t solely claim to be The Writer because I wear a few hats and I like a lot of things, as we all do. However, I love to write. What are your favorite things to write? I like to write plays, sketches, screen plays and jokes now. I use to think I was supposed to become a poet just because I always had a lot to say. Then the more I read and explored different types of writing I realized there are soo many different ways to say something. Not even just the way you phrase but also how you choose to FRAME it.
However, no matter the frame or phrase as a writer, or person who likes to write you just have to get it out. For some that’s as simple as jotting it down in a notebook or notes app and expanding on it later. For others it could be an uphill battle of negative thoughts internal or external forces saying “nah this idea is trash”. But look at it this way, how will you know something is truly garbage until you open the trash bag?
A little corny, I know, but you get what I’m saying. Put it out there, get it written down so you can continue to grow.
“You don’t start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking it’s good stuff, and then gradually you get better at it. That’s why I say one of the most valuable traits is persistence.”Octavia E. Butler
Procrastination can be a disease of writing but persistence can be the vitamin.
I mean thats why most writers do lock ins.
If you haven’t done one it’s pretty self explanatory. You “lock” yourself into a space without any distractions from technology, people, or anything that would take your attention away from the project. The first lock in I did I finished writing my first full length play. Keeping it really really real it was hard af. Since then haven’t written entire full length stage play, but if I never finished I wouldn’t be where I am today with my writing.
So in honor of growth & progression here’s that old play to read at your leisure or if you get bored enough. I just hope it makes you want to finish that piece you’re feeling iffy about and just can’t figure out how to finish.
